Healing Trauma & Loss

Trauma, grief, or lossregardless of its sourcedoesn't have to hold you back from living a more hopeful, fulfilling life.

Everyone's experience is unique, but the resulting pain can be universal: It can leave you feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and repeating unhelpful patterns.

Healing begins as you process your experience, break old patterns, and create a new story of yourself that helps you connect and engage with life in healthier ways.

By integrating evidence-based methods, including EMDR and Trauma-focused CBT, I adapt therapy to you and your needs. Together, we’ll address the problems of trauma, grief, or lossboth past and presentin a safe and nurturing environment, at a pace that works for you.

Individual Therapy

Providing online therapy for adults for a range of mental health and wellness issues with compassion and care.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy! Your story, your context, and identities matter. My work with you is strengths-based, client-centered, warm, and authentic.

I provide a positive space in which to explore your issues and therapy goals, so that you can engage in the healing process and make real change–all while experiencing more hope and satisfaction in life.

The online telehealth environment where we'll meet provides convenience and flexibility, and promotes a sense of ease with the therapy process. I serve individuals 18 years or older who live in Seattle and across Washington State.

Life/Work Transitions

Life coaching supports individuals in creating a vision for themselves and achieving personal or professional goals.

Life coaching can be transformational: It helps you develop new skills, identify your innate strengths, and take concrete steps towards your goalsall so that you can live more fully and authentically.

Through online coaching, I combine real-world experience in various professional settings, so that you can clarify your vision for yourself, navigate change, and build a new personal "tool box" for yourself.

The accountability and collaboration that coaching provides is also a great

way to support the growth you've

experienced in therapy! Life coaching is available to individuals in Washington State and across the United States.

  • How do I get started?
The good news is that you've already started! You've done the hardest part: You decided to reach out. The next step is to schedule a complimentary 20-minute online consultation so that we can discuss your goals for therapy and answer any questions or concerns you may have. The initial consultation also provides you with an opportunity to see if we are a good fit. "Fit"--feeling secure and comfortable with your therapist--is an important part of the process! If you don't feel that an initial consultation is necessary, feel free to complete the Contact form and let me know that you're ready to go! I'll send you an email with next steps. I usually reply within 1-2 business days, but will always try to respond a.s.a.p. You can also email me directly at karyn@soundfocustherapy.com.
  • What services do you offer?
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate and a certified Master Life Coach. I offer therapy and coaching services to individuals ages 18 years and older via a secure, HIPAA compliant video platform. I am trained in the provision of EMDR and Trauma-informed CBT services for trauma, PTSD, and CPTSD. In addition to trauma, I have experience working with a wide variety of issues and concerns, including: anxiety, depression, grief and loss, isolation and loneliness, career and work-related issues, phase of life, identity development, relationships, managing change and transitions, ADHD, attachment issues, and boundary setting, as well as existential concerns and spirituality. If you have questions about my services and whether or not I can address your specific concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me. You can complete the form on the Contact page, or email me directly at karyn@soundfocustherapy.com.
  • What populations do you work with?
I have experience working with adults aged 18 through 85 years old! I work with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, with diverse identities and cultural contexts. I factor in your life experiences, beliefs and values, family system, culture, and social networks in my approach. I am committed to a lifelong practice of cultural humility and strive to create an environment where all aspects of your identity are honored and validated. At this time, I do not work with couples, children, or families.
  • What is your approach?
My approach to therapy and coaching is collaborative, integrative, and non-judgmental. I am trained in multiple therapy models and will pull from various approaches depending upon your needs and concerns. Examples of these models include--but are not limited to--CBT, Person-centered, Narrative therapy, Strengths-based, Parts work and family systems, EMDR, Attachment-focused theory, Existential, and Mindfulness. I seek to support individuals wherever they are on their journey and my focus is on you and your goals. In addition to my therapy training and experience, my coaching work is informed by my more than 25 years of experience in corporate and non-profit settings in a variety of roles. I also value the use of humor in both therapy and coaching, as appropriate. Laughter can be healing, shift our perspective, and help us connect with ourselves and others. Therapy vs. Coaching: What's the difference? I utilize both therapy and life coaching with most of my clients, depending up your goals and what you are currently experiencing in your daily life. If you have questions about whether therapy or life coaching is right for you, complete the form on the Contact page, or email me directly at karyn@soundfocustherapy.com.
  • Do you take insurance?
No, unfortunately, at this time I do not take insurance. However, I am always happy to provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company. Please note: I cannot guarantee reimbursement for private pay clients. A limited number of reduced fee spots are available, on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please contact me for more information at karyn@soundfocustherapy.com. Working With Your Insurance Company If you are planning on being reimbursed for your therapy, consider contacting your insurance company to ask the following questions (see below). You can usually find the phone number for customer service on the back of your insurance card. ● What are my mental health therapy benefits exactly? ● What is my out of network percentage of coverage? ● Do I have a deductible? If yes, how much is it? ● How much of my deductible has been met so far? ● Do I need a written referral from my primary care doctor to use my mental health therapy benefits? ● Do I need authorization on file prior to starting therapy? ● Is there a special form I need use in order to be reimbursed? If yes, where is the form located and how do I access it? A Note About Private Pay While having insurance coverage is generally positive, there can be benefits to paying directly for therapy, such as privacy and control of your mental health care. Insurance companies have the ability to track a client's therapy and may request access to progress notes or any diagnoses. In fact, most insurance companies require a medical diagnosis for therapy clients, which can then become part of your medical record. In addition, insurance companies often determine the number and frequency of appointments available to therapy clients--as opposed to clients determining this for themselves.
